The Challenge of Homeschooling Diversity
My journey began with the overwhelming challenge of homeschooling my four unique children, each with their own special needs and at different educational and emotional stages. The complexity of addressing varied grades and developmental levels led to frustration and tears – both theirs and mine. It was a struggle that many parents face, feeling ineffectual and drained.
A Breakthrough with 'Home Economics'
The turning point arrived unexpectedly through introducing 'home economics' into our curriculum. This became more than just a subject; it was a gateway to engagement and learning for all my children. From budgeting exercises to logistical planning, every activity turned into a stealthy, yet effective lesson. The joy of learning was reignited, exemplified by discussions over peanut butter molasses cookies about George Washington Carver. It was a eureka moment that birthed the idea of blending learning with baking.
AND then
this happened
We became foster parents! In Georgia, where we first got our license, we couldn't homeschool our foster kids. So, while my own kids learned at home, my foster kiddos went to public school. You'd think this might cause some issues, but instead, something wonderful occurred. My home-schooled children began using their home economics time to make after-school snacks and gifts for their siblings. If they found a lesson particularly engaging, they'd recreate it during weekends with their foster siblings.
Where my foster children had struggled academically, we now saw consistent, remarkable improvement. This became a pattern in our home. Saturdays evolved into extra learning days, filled with shopping and baking, similar to our past routine but infused with new purpose. These days, while seemingly unchanged, were transformed by this newfound intention.
